Gruvan: A new Viaplay series about life and work underground

On October 27, Gruvan premieres on Viaplay – a new series that takes viewers deep into some of Sweden’s most advanced and vital workplaces: the mines in Kiruna, Malmberget, and Aitik.

Playing an important role in shaping the future of Sweden and Europe, the production reflects a long-standing wish within the industry to present a more nuanced and realistic picture of the mining sector. According to Svemin – which collaborates on the production and is part of the Swedish Metals & Minerals Program Office – the aim is to show both the great responsibility and the strong sense of pride that define the work.

Beyond offering a glimpse into a central part of Swedish industry, Gruvan helps shed light on the complex issues surrounding metal and mineral supply – from technical and economic to social and environmental perspectives. Mining affects people, communities, and other industries, emphasizing the importance of continued research and innovation to develop sustainable solutions. The series may also spark curiosity and engagement with the field, encouraging more people to explore education and career paths related to the future of metals and minerals.

Produced by Alaska Film & TV in collaboration with Viaplay, LKAB, Boliden, and Svemin, Gruvan premieres on October 27 at 21:00 on Viaplay and TV3. It follows the people, the technology, and some of the world’s largest machines that keep Sweden’s industrial heart beating – around the clock, all year round. With exclusive access to LKAB’s and Boliden’s operations, the series portrays both the everyday work and the technological innovations shaping modern mining.
