Joint workshop provided valuable input for future policy work

When Swedish Metals & Minerals and Net Zero Industries brought together 15 projects in a joint workshop, the focus was on knowledge exchange, needs analysis and future system impact. The day resulted in valuable input that will strengthen continued policy development and collaboration between the programs.

On Monday, 24 November, the two programs held the workshop together with the projects from their joint call on regulations and policy instruments. Through dialogue and shared learning, participants discussed how policy and regulatory frameworks can best support industrial transition.

Sofia Wieselfors from Net Zero Industries and Gert Nilson from Swedish Metals & Minerals opened the day by emphasising that the Impact Innovation programs share a responsibility to create better conditions for the industrial value chain to move towards the programs’ missions. They highlighted the strong synergies between the programs’ value chains, and how collaborations like this are therefore essential. The projects were part of the programs’ first call, where policy change and other policy instruments play a crucial role in enabling the transition.

After group discussions, participants highlighted the importance of:

  • creating clusters between research projects, as well as smaller networks between industry, academia and public agencies,
  • supporting the projects in disseminating their results so they can influence the systems in which they are applied and contribute to change over time,
  • identifying what is needed to ensure that project knowledge can inform future standards and policy at both national and EU level,
  • establishing long-term and predictable conditions that enable industry to remain competitive and resilient.

Enabling dialogue between projects and creating new opportunities for them to reach relevant stakeholders is essential. Representatives from the Swedish Energy Agency, Vinnova, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, Teknikföretagen and Jernkontoret were therefore also present at the workshop. The programs will now continue to identify which needs should be taken forward to support sustainable change.
