Cross-sector dialogue in Almedalen highlights the supply of metals and minerals

Almedalen – Norra Scen, 25 June 2025

How can we ensure access to the metals and minerals that underpin our defence capabilities, industrial competitiveness, and sustainable transition? This was the starting point when LKAB gathered around 70 decision-makers and experts for a roundtable discussion during Almedalen Week.

Swedish Metals & Minerals participated alongside representatives from the Swedish Armed Forces, Business Sweden, the Swedish Transport Administration, several municipalities, as well as the Swedish Parliament and the European Parliament. The aim was to build a shared understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with a secure and sustainable supply of metals and minerals.

Cross-sector dialogue

Maria Sunér, CEO of Svemin and Chair of Swedish Metals & Minerals, emphasised the importance of broad collaboration:
“We need to start talking with – not about – each other. This discussion brought together people with different roles and perspectives at the same table. That is a key foundation for a successful transition.”

Niclas Dahlström, Head of Social Innovation at Swedish Metals & Minerals, highlighted the open format of the dialogue:
“The greatest value was the opportunity to discuss complex issues without prestige, together with stakeholders who bring different viewpoints. Trade-offs require co-creation – the solutions are rarely black and white.”

A shared responsibility

The supply of metals and minerals is a strategic issue that affects multiple parts of society and requires long-term cooperation between industry, public authorities, and decision-makers.

We extend our sincere thanks to all participants – including Jan Moström (LKAB), Ewa Skoog Haslum (Swedish Armed Forces), Lena Sellgren (Business Sweden), Roberto Maiorana (Swedish Transport Administration), Emelie Zakrisson (OX2), Mats Taaveniku (Kiruna Municipality), and Jason LaTorre (Ambassador of Canada to Sweden) – for their valuable insights from both the stage and the discussion tables.
