Nordic Algae Research for Passive Wastewater Treatment in the Mining Industry (NARMIN)

Important results from the project

The project fulfilled its objective to evaluate the potential of microalgae to clean mine water, with a focus on heavy metal removal and concept development. Laboratory tests showed that microalgae effectively absorb metals from water, which confirms the potential of the technology and provides a basis for further development. Other results include increased competence building, strengthened interest in biological solutions within various industries and planning of a follow-up project.

Expected long term effects

The project will contribute to more sustainable and circular water management in industry. By developing new methods with microalgae, the use of chemicals and the environmental impact can be reduced, and resource-efficient cleaning methods can grow. The technology can be integrated into existing infrastructure and spread to other industries. The project strengthens collaboration between academia and industry, and contributes to future innovation, policy development and skills supply.

Approach and implementation

A geochemical and biological characterization of the lake was carried out over two seasons. Selected microalgae with good cleaning capacity were tested in comparison with the natural algae population in the lake water. The growth potential of local algae was assessed using different types of fertilizers to identify the most suitable nutrients. Finally, an in-situ experiment was carried out where the most promising microalgae were combined with the identified fertilizer under natural conditions.
