Sustainable Biochar for Metallurgical Use -Technical Perspective (HåBiMet)
Important results from the project
The HåBiMet – Technical Perspective project met its goals. Industry requirements were mapped, biomass availability assessed, and scale-up barriers identified. A broad cross-sector network was established. Other key results include a model for future biocarbon demand, identification of phosphorus as a critical challenge, and insights into complementary uses of biocarbon in metallurgy and agriculture.
Expected long term effects
The project has shown that biocarbon can replace fossil coal in metallurgical processes, which in the long term can contribute to reduced emissions, new business models in the bioeconomy, regional development through increased use of forest residues, and strengthened research and education. Through cross-sector collaboration, the project has created a platform for continued innovation and policy development.
Approach and implementation
The project was implemented as a feasibility study over eight months with five work packages. Activities such as seminars, interviews and a master´s thesis were carried out according to plan. The collaboration between actors from industry, academia and the energy sector worked well. No major obstacles arose, and the project developed as planned with several valuable results.
