Variable scrap yard to manage a precarious material supply

Important results from the project

The project was a feasibility study with the goal of mapping today´s material flow and developing a concrete plan and conditions for a larger effort in the area. The goal is considered fulfilled when a basis has been developed for a broader effort and a strong consortium has been formed. The basis has identified issues that need to be addressed in order to cope with a variable supply of scrap. It is about the entire circular flow – from scrap to new products, which after use become scrap again.

Expected long term effects

The long-term aim is to create a resource-efficient and resilient foundry process. The long-term effects will mean a foundry industry that becomes less sensitive to variations in the chemical composition of the scrap as methods for managing this variation along the entire circular flow will be developed. In addition to managing the variation in chemical composition, alternative flows of scrap will also be identified to ensure both access and management of a variation in the long term.

Approach and implementation

The project started with a strategic analysis and mapping of the current situation of the participating companies in terms of scrap and material management. The result summarized the industry´s needs for managing a variable scrap yard. From discussions at project meetings and a workshop, important issues to be addressed were identified and compiled. The results from the activities form the basis for a proposal for a project for a broader effort with the aim to manage a variable scrap yard.
