Continuous fragmentation monitoring for underground mining operations

Important results from the project

The project objectives were achieved by demonstrating and validating the technical solution for fragmentation analysis technology (Piece Case Monitoring – to assess rock size after blasting). The system has been adapted and mounted on a loader intended for underground mines. The test has been carried out in a relevant environment corresponding to that found in mines. During the validation, the robustness of the system has been tested and calibrated against known fragmentation size.

Expected long term effects

The technology demonstrated in this feasibility study could potentially lead to long term improvements in mining efficiency. Increased efficiency not only impacts the mines economics through increased material throughput but also its environment impact by reducing energy consumption in material handling and crushing and grinding circuits and by minimizing consumables in drilling and blasting.

Approach and implementation

The project was a well-functioning partnership between Epiroc and Örebro University and the set plan has been achieved on time. Epiroc contributes with engineering support as well as equipment and test materials and space for testing and installation. Örebro University provided software and hardware for the fragmentation solution. Professor Joshua Marshall from Queen´s University coordinated the work to evaluate the results. This with commercial systems as a reference.
