Brass Replacement Alloys Validation Operations II (BRAVO II)
Purpose and goal
BRAVO II aims to enable the sustainable industrial implementation of lead-free brass in Sweden and the Nordic region by 2031, when all products in contact with drinking water must be lead-free. The goal is to develop robust alloy systems and optimized processes, business models, and investment plans for a continued circular value chain and a competitive industry without compromising other sustainability attributes such as life time and climate footprint.
Expected effects and result
BRAVO II is expected to deliver business models, investment plans, and a technical solutions for the transition to lead-free brass, considering environmental, technical, and economic aspects. This will enable a sustainable shift and compliance with new EU regulations. Lead removal technology will help phase out lead from society. Technical efforts in alloy and process optimization will ensure the industry can continue to deliver durable products based on recycled material.
Planned approach and implementation
BRAVO II is a collaboration between 12 companies across, one authority, and 2 research institutes. WP1 coordination and roadmap implementation; WP2 – optimization of materials and processes through calculations, lab tests, and industrial trials; WP3 – evaluation of Pb removal technology from technical, economic, and collaboration perspectives; WP4 – machining forum with industry trials and workshops; WP5 – integrated techno-economic analyses and business models for sustainable transition.
