Geopolitics of the Battery Value Chain – A Pre-study on Swedish-African Graduate Student Exchange (GEOBAT)

Purpose and goal

The project will map the conditions for establishing a long-term Swedish-African researcher exchange in the sustainable battery value chain. It aims to develop a model for the programme, analyse needs and competencies, define inclusive collaboration methods, strengthen partnerships, and prepare the basis for a larger future research and education initiative.

Expected effects and result

The project will deliver a model for researcher exchange and a mapping of needs and conditions. The effects include strengthened competence along the battery value chain, more equitable partnerships between Sweden and Africa, and increased capacity for sustainable raw material and battery development.

Planned approach and implementation

The project includes a needs assessment, interviews, and workshops in Sweden and the DRC. A model for researcher exchange will be developed, covering structure, courses, and inclusive methods. Partnerships are strengthened through a joint steering group, MoUs, and industry dialogue. The work concludes with a plan for a larger research and education programme.
